The English Spy: An Original Work Characteristic, Satirical, And Humorous.
Comprising Scenes And Sketches In Every Rank Of Society, Being Portraits Drawn From The Life
The English Spy, first published in 1825 under the pen name Bernard Blackmantle, is a satirical tour of Regency society by the journalist Charles Molloy Westmacott, with illustrations by Robert Cruikshank. Its narrator begins at Eton, describing the boys, masters and the Montem festival, moves on to Oxford, with freshmen, college servants, dinner parties and wine parties at Brasenose, and then turns to London: the opera, Kensington Gardens on a Sunday evening, fashionable saloons and the singularities of the year. Prose sketches alternate with comic verse, and many characters were recognizable portraits of real people. The book is a scrapbook of Regency manners, gossip and slang.
