C. M. Westmacott

C. M. Westmacott, Charles Molloy Westmacott, was an English journalist and satirist of the late Regency. He wrote under the pen name Bernard Blackmantle, and The English Spy, published in 1825 and 1826 with illustrations by Robert Cruikshank, offered sketches of life at Eton, Oxford and fashionable London, many of them recognizable portraits of real people. As owner and editor of the Sunday paper The Age, he became notorious for gossip and personal attacks, which earned him enemies in society and the theater.
