The Emperor Marcus Aurelius
The Emperor Marcus Aurelius: A Study in Ideals, published in 1913, is a short life of the philosopher-emperor by John C. Joy, an Irish Jesuit. Joy follows Marcus from his boyhood among Stoic teachers through his accession, life in the palace, the long campaigns on the Danube during which he wrote his Meditations, and his last days in Rome. He admires the emperor's moral seriousness, which earned him the name of a pagan Thomas à Kempis, but also asks why so upright a ruler allowed the persecution of Christians in his reign and what Stoicism could not supply. The tone is sympathetic, reflective and frankly Christian. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
