The eclipse of Russia

by Emile Joseph Dillon

About 10 h 13 min of reading23 chapters

E. J. Dillon spent some thirty years in Russia as a scholar and newspaper correspondent and was a close friend of Sergei Witte, the finance minister and premier to whose memory the book is dedicated. Written in 1918 as the empire collapsed, it is part analysis and part memoir: chapters on the Russian mind and the tsarist bureaucracy, personal recollections of Nicholas II, Father Gapon, the police spy Azef and Rasputin, and a detailed account of the secret treaty of Björkö that the tsar signed with the German emperor behind his ministers' backs. Dillon's thesis is that the tsardom was predatory and unreformable and that Europe's statesmen misread it at every turn. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
