The Danish History of Saxo Grammaticus, written in Latin around 1200, is the earliest full history of Denmark and the chief source for the legendary past of the Danes. This volume gives the first nine books, the mythical and heroic portion, in Oliver Elton's translation of 1894. Here are the kings and champions of the old North: Hadding and Frode, the shield-maidens and berserks, the hero Starkad, the saga of Rolf Kraki, the career of Ragnar Lodbrok, and in Books III and IV the story of Amleth, the prince who feigned madness to avenge his father, which reached Shakespeare and became Hamlet. Saxo was a learned clerk who dressed Norse legend in ornate Latin, and his book preserves stories that survive nowhere else. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
