The Conflict of Religions in the Early Roman Empire

by T. R. Glover

About 9 h 50 min of reading13 chapters

The Conflict of Religions in the Early Roman Empire, first published in 1909, grew out of lectures T. R. Glover gave at Mansfield College, Oxford. Glover, a Cambridge classicist, examines the religious and philosophical choices open to an educated person in the first two centuries of the empire. He describes traditional Roman religion, the Stoics, Plutarch's attempt to reconcile philosophy and old belief, and the Epicurean answer of atoms instead of gods, and he sets beside them Jesus of Nazareth, his followers, the conflict between Christians and Jews, the pagan critic Celsus and the Christian writers Clement of Alexandria and Tertullian. His aim is to explain why Christianity prevailed among its rivals. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
