The Complete Works of Mark Twain is, despite its title, a compilation of three of Mark Twain's early books in the order of their first publication. The Innocents Abroad, from 1869, is the account of the pleasure cruise on the Quaker City to Europe and the Holy Land that made Twain famous, with its irreverent treatment of old masters and pilgrims. A Burlesque Autobiography, from 1871, is a short comic sketch of the author's disreputable ancestors, printed with the Awful, Terrible Medieval Romance. Roughing It, from 1872, recounts his years in Nevada and California as a prospector, miner and newspaperman and his visit to the Sandwich Islands. Together they show Twain inventing his voice as a traveler and humorist. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
