The Book of War: The Military Classic of the Far East
The Articles of Suntzu; The Sayings of Wutzu
The Book of War, published in 1908, is Everard Ferguson Calthrop's English translation of two classics of Chinese military thought. The Articles of Suntzu, the text better known as The Art of War, set out in thirteen chapters the principles of planning, deception, the use of terrain, the handling of troops and the employment of spies, insisting that the best victory is the one won without fighting. The Sayings of Wutzu, attributed to the general Wu Qi, treat the government of the state, the control of the army and the qualities of a commander. Calthrop, a British officer who had studied in Japan, worked partly from Japanese tradition, and an introduction explains the background.
