The Book of the Damned
The Book of the Damned, published in 1919, is the first of Charles Fort's collections of what he called damned data: reports that science, in his view, had excluded because they did not fit. Drawing on years of reading in newspapers and scientific journals, Fort marches past his readers a procession of red rains and black rains, falls of frogs, fish, stones and strange substances from the sky, unexplained lights and objects seen in the heavens. Rather than offer a theory, he mocks the explanations given by the authorities and floats outrageous alternatives of his own. His sardonic, aphoristic style gave rise to the adjective Fortean.
