The Bontoc Igorot, published in Manila in 1905, is Albert Ernest Jenks's study of a mountain people of northern Luzon, written as the first volume of the Ethnological Survey set up by the American administration of the Philippines. Jenks and his wife lived for five months in Bontoc pueblo in 1903, and the book records what he saw there: the layout of the town and its communal houses, childbirth, courtship and marriage, farming in irrigated terraces, hunting and fishing, crafts, trade, property, warfare and religion. More than a hundred photographs and drawings accompany the text. It is a detailed early ethnography, and also a document of the colonial gaze that produced it. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
