The Beth Book

by Sarah Grand

Being a Study of the Life of Elizabeth Caldwell Maclure, a Woman of Genius

About 16 h 18 min of reading53 chapters

The Beth Book, published in 1897 by Sarah Grand, is subtitled a study of the life of Elizabeth Caldwell Maclure, a woman of genius, and is one of the central novels of the New Woman movement. It follows Beth from an impoverished childhood in Ireland and Yorkshire, where her intelligence is mistaken for naughtiness and her brothers' education comes before hers, through school and an early marriage to a doctor whose work and conduct she comes to find intolerable, to her discovery of her own vocation as a writer and speaker. Grand's attacks on the double standard, the Contagious Diseases Acts and the education of girls made the book controversial; its portrait of a mind forming itself is its lasting interest.
