Sarah Grand (1854–1943) was the pen name of Frances Elizabeth Bellenden Clarke, an Irish-born feminist novelist who coined the phrase New Woman in 1894. Married at sixteen to an army surgeon, she left him in 1890 to write, and The Heavenly Twins (1893), which dealt frankly with venereal disease and the sexual double standard, made her famous and sold widely in America. The Beth Book (1897), the story of a woman of genius growing up and marrying badly, is the most autobiographical of her novels. She lectured for women's suffrage and later served six terms as mayoress of Bath, where she lived from 1920.
