The Belle of Bowling Green
New York around 1800 is a small city whose wealthy Dutch and English families live in handsome brick houses around the Bowling Green, at the foot of Broadway. Sapphira Bloommaert, the beautiful daughter of a judge of old Dutch stock, is courted by half the young men of the town and must choose, in a season of political quarrels between Federalists and Republicans, yellow fever scares and family pride. Amelia Barr published the novel in 1904, one of several she set in the early republic, and her interest is as much in the furniture, the dress, the street names and the manners of the vanished city as in the love story. The result is a social portrait of Knickerbocker New York written with affection. Read it online in your browser on Vinteuil; the first chapter is free.
