Amelia E. Barr (1831–1919) was an English-born American novelist, born Amelia Huddleston in Ulverston, Lancashire, the daughter of a Methodist minister. She married a Scottish accountant and emigrated with him to Texas in 1853; in the yellow fever epidemic of 1867 at Galveston she lost her husband and three sons within weeks. Left with three daughters, she moved to New York and at nearly fifty began writing fiction to support them, producing some eighty novels over forty years, among them Jan Vedder's Wife, The Bow of Orange Ribbon, Remember the Alamo and The Belle of Bowling Green, many set in old New York or the Yorkshire of her youth.
