The Battle of the Strong, published in 1898, is Gilbert Parker's novel of Jersey during the wars with revolutionary France, built around Guida Landresse, a Jersey girl, and the two men who love her: Philip d'Avranche, a naval officer who rises to a continental dukedom, and the shipbuilder Ranulph Delagarde. This sixth and final volume opens with the island gathered in the Royal Court to welcome d'Avranche home as an admiral and a prince, and the scene in which Guida's claim is at last heard in public. The remaining chapters, an epilogue set a year later in Jersey and a glossary of Jersey words and phrases bring the story to its close. Readers new to the book should begin with the first volume.
