The Babur-nama is the autobiography of Zahiru'd-din Muhammad Babur, the Central Asian prince who lost his small kingdom of Farghana as a boy, won and lost Samarkand twice, took Kabul, and in 1526 defeated the Sultan of Delhi at Panipat to found the Mughal Empire in India. Written in his native Turki, it records year by year his campaigns, his hunger, his drinking parties and his repentance, the plants, animals and customs of each country he entered, and his candid judgments of friends, enemies and poets. Annette Susannah Beveridge's translation, completed in 1922 after years of work on the manuscripts, is the standard English version, with a long introduction, appendices and notes. The gaps in the text are those of the original. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
