Babur (1483–1530), born Zahiru'd-din Muhammad, was a Central Asian prince descended from Timur and Genghis Khan who founded the Mughal Empire in India. He inherited the small kingdom of Farghana at eleven, won and lost Samarkand twice, and in 1504 took Kabul, which became his base for twenty years. In 1526 he defeated the Sultan of Delhi at Panipat and the Rajput confederacy at Khanua the following year, establishing a dynasty that ruled India for three centuries. His autobiography, the Babur-nama, written in Turki, is one of the frankest and most observant memoirs of any ruler.
