by Philipp Melanchthon

The confession of faith, which was submitted to His Imperial Majesty Charles V at the diet of Augsburg in the year 1530

About 59 min of reading32 chapters

The Augsburg Confession is the founding statement of faith of the Lutheran churches. Drawn up by Philipp Melanchthon, Luther's close colleague, it was presented to the Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Augsburg in 1530, in the hope of showing that the reformers' teaching agreed with Scripture and the ancient church. After a preface to the emperor, its first part sets out the doctrines held by the Lutherans in a series of articles, on God, original sin, the Son of God, justification by faith, the ministry, the church, baptism, the Lord's Supper and more; the second part describes the abuses the reformers had corrected. Concise and conciliatory in tone, it remains a key document of the Reformation. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
