The Astral Plane
Its Scenery, Inhabitants and Phenomena
The Astral Plane, published in 1895, was the fifth in a series of short manuals in which the Theosophical Society set out its teachings for ordinary readers. C. W. Leadbeater, one of the movement's best-known writers, describes the astral plane, which he equates with the Sanskrit Kamaloka, as a real region beyond the physical world. He sets out its scenery, then its inhabitants, sorted into living human beings who visit it in sleep or trance, the human dead, non-human entities and artificial beings created by thought, and finally the phenomena that he believed explain séance-room events. The book is a clear statement of Theosophical belief at the end of the nineteenth century. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
