The Art of War is the English version, made in 1862 by the American officers G. H. Mendell and W. P. Craighill, of the Précis de l'art de la guerre by Antoine-Henri Jomini, the Swiss-born general who served under Napoleon and later the Tsar. Jomini sets out the principles he believed underlay Napoleon's victories: the relation of war to policy, the different kinds of war, military policy, strategy with its theaters, bases, lines of operation and decisive points, grand tactics and battles, the combination of the three arms, logistics and the conduct of campaigns. His emphasis on concentrating force at the decisive point and his orderly vocabulary made the book a standard text at West Point and in European staff colleges. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
