Antoine-Henri Jomini (1779–1869) was a Swiss-born military theorist and historian, the most widely read interpreter of Napoleonic warfare in the nineteenth century. A bank clerk who taught himself strategy, he joined the French army, served on Marshal Ney's staff at Jena and Eylau and in Spain and Russia, and rose to general of brigade. Passed over for promotion, he transferred to the Russian service in 1813, where he founded a military academy and advised the Tsar for decades. His Traité des grandes opérations militaires and Précis de l'art de la guerre, translated as The Art of War, reduced strategy to principles taught at West Point and in European staff colleges.
