About 12 h 01 min of reading30 chapters

Charles Warren Haskins, who went to California in the gold rush, published The Argonauts of California in 1890 as the reminiscences of a pioneer. In lively, anecdotal chapters he describes the journey west, life in the mining camps, the work of digging and washing for gold, the characters who filled the diggings, the rough justice of the camps and the growth of towns and of San Francisco. The book is illustrated with drawings by the author, and it includes a long list of the names of about thirty-five thousand forty-niners that Haskins collected, which makes it a resource for family historians as well as a colorful record of the early mining days. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
