About 19 h 39 min of reading75 chapters

The Archaeology and Prehistoric Annals of Scotland, published in 1851 by Daniel Wilson, secretary of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, is the book that introduced the word prehistoric into English. Wilson arranges the Scottish past by the Scandinavian system of three ages, treating in turn the Stone period, with its aboriginal traces, sepulchral memorials, dwellings, standing stones, weapons, vessels and skulls; the Bronze period and the coming of metals; and the Iron period, with the Roman invasion, strongholds and burials. A fourth part on the Christian period covers sculptured stones, the Norrie's Law relics, Scandinavian remains, early churches and medieval antiquities. Woodcuts of objects from the Society's museum illustrate the text. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
