Sir Daniel Wilson (1816–1892) was a Scottish-Canadian archaeologist, ethnologist and university administrator. Born in Edinburgh, he trained as an artist and engraver before turning to antiquities, and as secretary of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland reorganized its museum and wrote The Archaeology and Prehistoric Annals of Scotland (1851), which introduced the word prehistoric into English. In 1853 he became professor of history and English literature at University College, Toronto, where he spent the rest of his life, serving as president of the college and then of the University of Toronto. Prehistoric Man (1862) extended his comparative method to the Americas. He was knighted in 1888.
