by William Gordon Holmes

About 8 h 28 min of reading15 chapters

William Gordon Holmes's The Age of Justinian and Theodora, first published in 1905 and here in the second edition of 1912, was the first comprehensive English history of the reign that gave the Roman world the Corpus of civil law, the church of St. Sophia and the reconquest of Italy and Africa. This first volume sets the stage. A long chapter describes Constantinople in the sixth century, its history, topography and society; another surveys the empire under Anastasius, its politics, education and religious divisions. Then come the rise of the peasant soldier Justin and his nephew Justinian, and the early career of Theodora, the actress who became empress, as told by Procopius and weighed by Holmes. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
