William Gordon Holmes was a British historian of the later Roman Empire. His principal work, The Age of Justinian and Theodora: A History of the Sixth Century A.D., appeared in two volumes in 1905 and 1907 and in a revised second edition in 1912, and was the first comprehensive account in English of the reign that produced the codification of Roman law, the church of St. Sophia and the reconquest of Italy and North Africa. The first volume describes Constantinople and the empire that Justinian inherited and the rise of Justinian and Theodora; the second follows the reign itself. Beyond this book, little about his life has been recorded.
