The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Part 1.

by Mark Twain

About 27 min of reading4 chapters

This short file contains only the opening of Mark Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, first published in 1876: the author's preface and the first three chapters. Twain explains in the preface that most of the adventures really happened, to himself or to schoolmates, and that he hoped to remind adults of how they once felt and thought. The chapters introduce Tom in the Mississippi River town of St. Petersburg, dodging his Aunt Polly, fighting a well-dressed new boy, turning the punishment of whitewashing the fence into a profitable game, and catching his first sight of Becky Thatcher. The comic tone and the sharp observation of boyhood are already there. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
