by Mark Twain

About 6 h 18 min of reading76 chapters

The $30,000 Bequest, and Other Stories, published in 1906, collects Mark Twain's shorter fiction and sketches from his later years. In the title story a bookkeeper and his wife in a small Western town are promised a legacy by a distant relative and begin spending and investing it in their imaginations long before any money arrives. The volume also includes "A Dog's Tale," a protest against vivisection told by the dog herself, the moral puzzle of "Was It Heaven? Or Hell?," "The Californian's Tale," the comic diaries of Adam and Eve, the essay "How to Tell a Story," and a run of burlesques, letters and squibs in which Twain's satire is often darker than in his early work. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
