by Richard Dehan

About 12 h 13 min of reading72 chapters

In January 1914 Franky Sherbrand, a young Guards officer, marries Margot Mountjohn, a rich and restless girl whose life is lived in her club. Around them Richard Dehan assembles a wide cast of London society in the last months of peace, including the surgeon Owen Saxham from The Dop Doctor, his niece Patrine, a German aviator with secrets and an English flyer, and then carries them into the war, through Belgium, the wireless station at Nordeich and the first wounded coming home. Published in 1918 while the fighting continued, it is a long, crowded novel of the day, as its subtitle says, written by Clotilde Graves under the pen name she used for her fiction. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
