Terrestrial and Celestial Globes Volume 2

by Edward Luther Stevenson

About 6 h 31 min of reading13 chapters

Edward Luther Stevenson, an American historian of geography and cartography, published Terrestrial and Celestial Globes in two volumes in 1921 for the Hispanic Society of America. This second volume continues the story from the beginning of the seventeenth century, when leadership in globe making passed to the Dutch masters such as the Van Langrens, Jodocus Hondius and Willem Jansz Blaeu, through the globe makers of the later seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, from Delisle to Ferguson, and closes with a chapter on the materials and methods of globe construction. With its bibliography and detailed index of makers, it remains a standard reference on the history of globes as scientific instruments and works of art. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
