Ten Thousand Miles with a Dog Sled

by Hudson Stuck

A Narrative of Winter Travel in Interior Alaska

About 8 h 07 min of reading19 chapters

Hudson Stuck was the Episcopal Archdeacon of the Yukon, and in Ten Thousand Miles with a Dog Sled, first published in 1914, he describes the winter journeys he made by dog team to the missions, native villages and mining camps of interior Alaska. The chapters follow actual routes: from Fairbanks to the Chandalar and the Koyukuk, across to Kotzebue Sound and Nome, up the Yukon to Tanana, and out to the Kuskokwim and the Iditarod diggings. Stuck writes plainly about cold, overflow ice, lost trails and the dogs he relied on, and he is outspoken about the treatment of Alaska's native peoples. He also led the first ascent of Denali in 1913. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
