Born in London, he emigrated to Texas as a young man, worked as a cowboy and teacher, was ordained, and became dean of the cathedral in Dallas. In 1904 he went north as Archdeacon of the Yukon, traveling thousands of miles each winter by dog sled to visit missions and native villages, and defending the rights of Alaska Natives.
