Shell-shock and other neuropsychiatric problems
Shell-Shock and Other Neuropsychiatric Problems, published in 1919, is a casebook assembled by the Harvard neuropathologist E. E. Southard from the medical literature of the First World War. It presents 589 case histories, abstracted from French, German, British, Italian and American sources and arranged by diagnostic group, from the psychoses incidental to the war through the organic injuries of the nervous system to the functional disorders that soldiers and doctors called shell-shock: mutism, tremor, paralysis, deafness and amnesia with no wound to explain them. Each case is given with its treatment and outcome, and Southard adds charts, an extended introduction and a bibliography by Norman Fenton. It is a document of the moment when war trauma entered medicine. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
