Elmer Ernest Southard (1876–1920) was an American neuropathologist and psychiatrist. Born in Boston and educated at Harvard, he became Bullard Professor of Neuropathology at Harvard Medical School and the first director of the Boston Psychopathic Hospital, where he trained a generation of psychiatrists and social workers. During the First World War he directed the army's neuropsychiatric training school in Boston, and his Shell-Shock and Other Neuropsychiatric Problems (1919) gathered 589 case histories from the war literature. The Kingdom of Evils, written with the social worker Mary Jarrett, appeared after his early death from pneumonia at forty-three. He was known for his energy and for coining diagnostic terms.
