Shakespeare's family

About 5 h 28 min of reading64 chapters

Shakespeare's Family is a work of patient archival research by Charlotte Carmichael Stopes, first published in 1901. Working from parish registers, wills, court rolls and heraldic records, she reconstructs the Shakespeares of Snitterfield and Stratford, the Arden family of the poet's mother, Anne Hathaway's relatives, and the fortunes of his children and their descendants. Later chapters follow collateral lines and the question of the family arms. Stopes was writing against a background of fashionable doubt about Shakespeare's authorship, and her method is to let documents speak: dates, property, debts and lawsuits rather than legend. The result is dry in places, but it remains a foundation for anyone curious about the world the playwright came from. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
