Charlotte Carmichael Stopes (1840–1929) was a Scottish scholar of Shakespeare and a campaigner for women's rights. Born in Edinburgh, she was among the first women in Scotland to receive a university certificate, and she married the brewer and archaeologist Henry Stopes; their daughter was the birth control pioneer Marie Stopes. Working in record offices without an academic post, she published The Bacon-Shakespeare Question Answered, Shakespeare's Family, Shakespeare's Warwickshire Contemporaries and a life of the Earl of Southampton, and she unearthed documents that scholars still cite. Her British Freewomen argued from history that women had once held, and should recover, the right to vote.
