Seneca Myths and Folk Tales was collected by Arthur C. Parker, an archaeologist of Seneca descent, and published by the Buffalo Historical Society in 1923. The stories were gathered on the Cattaraugus and other reservations of western New York, many from the storyteller Edward Cornplanter, and they include the cosmological legends of the Sky Woman and the twin brothers who made the world, tales of the little people and the stone giants, of the thunderers and the horned serpent, of animals and their tricks, and of hunters, wizards and witches. Parker's long introduction describes the Seneca world view and the manner of storytelling, and he adds notes on sources and variants throughout. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
