Selections from Viri Romae is a school edition of the Latin reader compiled in the 1770s by the French abbé Charles François L'Homond for his pupils in Paris. The Viri Romae, or Urbis Romae Viri Inlustres, retells the lives of the famous men of Rome in simple Latin drawn from Livy, Cicero, Valerius Maximus and other authors, from Romulus and the kings through Brutus, Cincinnatus, Camillus, the Scipios and the Gracchi to Marius, Sulla, Pompey, Caesar and Augustus. This American edition presents the stories with notes, a vocabulary, suggestions for the student and tables of grammatical constructions, so that a beginner can move from the grammar book into connected Latin prose while learning the legends of early Rome. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
