Charles François Lhomond (1727–1794) was a French priest, grammarian and schoolmaster. Born in Chaulnes in Picardy, he taught at the Collège du Cardinal-Lemoine in Paris, where he refused promotion in order to go on teaching the youngest classes. For his pupils he wrote the Latin reader De Viris Illustribus Urbis Romae, a collection of lives of famous Romans in simple Latin that was used in schools across Europe and America for two centuries, as well as a Latin grammar, an Epitome of sacred history and an elementary French grammar that went through countless editions. He refused the revolutionary oath, was imprisoned in 1793 and died the following year.
