Science and the modern world
Science and the Modern World grew out of the Lowell Lectures that Alfred North Whitehead gave in Boston in 1925, soon after leaving Cambridge mathematics for philosophy at Harvard. Whitehead traces how the scientific picture of the world, matter in motion in space and time, shaped Western thought from the seventeenth century, which he calls the century of genius, through the eighteenth century and the Romantic reaction, to relativity and quantum theory. He argues that this picture rests on abstractions mistaken for concrete reality, which he calls the fallacy of misplaced concreteness, and proposes a philosophy of organism in its place, closing with chapters on God, religion and science, and social progress.
