Alfred North Whitehead (1861–1947) was an English mathematician and philosopher. Born in Ramsgate, Kent, he studied and taught mathematics at Trinity College, Cambridge, where with his former student Bertrand Russell he wrote Principia Mathematica (1910 to 1913), an attempt to ground mathematics in logic. After years at the University of London he moved in 1924 to Harvard, where he turned to metaphysics. Science and the Modern World (1925), Process and Reality (1929) and Adventures of Ideas set out a philosophy of organism, in which reality consists of processes rather than things, the basis of what is now called process philosophy.
