Scenes in the Life of Harriet Tubman
Scenes in the Life of Harriet Tubman was published in 1869 by Sarah H. Bradford, a writer from Geneva, New York, to raise money for Tubman, who was living in poverty in Auburn and had never been paid for her wartime service. Drawing on interviews with Tubman and letters from people who knew her, Bradford tells of her childhood in slavery on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, the blow to the head that left her with lifelong seizures, her escape in 1849, and the nineteen journeys back to bring out some three hundred people on the Underground Railroad, as well as her work as a nurse, scout and spy for the Union army. It is the earliest biography of Tubman. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
