Sarah Hopkins Bradford (1818–1912) was an American writer from Geneva, New York, who published children's stories, a life of Peter the Great and a history of Columbus before she met Harriet Tubman, who had settled in nearby Auburn after the Civil War. Scenes in the Life of Harriet Tubman, published in 1869, was written from interviews with Tubman and letters from people who had known her, and its proceeds helped support Tubman and her family. Bradford revised and expanded it in 1886 as Harriet, the Moses of Her People. Her book was the only substantial account of Tubman's life for nearly a century.
