Salem Witchcraft, Volumes I and II

With an Account of Salem Village and a History of Opinions on Witchcraft and Kindred Subjects

About 20 h 01 min of reading24 chapters

Charles Wentworth Upham, a Salem minister who later became the town's mayor and a congressman, published Salem Witchcraft in 1867, expanding lectures he had given more than thirty years before. The work is in two volumes, given here together, and dedicated to Oliver Wendell Holmes. Upham first reconstructs Salem Village itself, with a map of its dwellings in 1692, its families, land disputes and church quarrels; he then surveys the history of opinion about witchcraft; and finally narrates the outbreak of 1692, from the afflicted girls in the minister's household through the examinations, trials and executions. His local knowledge gives the tragedy unusual depth. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
