Charles Wentworth Upham

Charles Wentworth Upham (1802–1875) was an American minister, politician and historian. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick, to a Loyalist family, he was educated at Harvard and served as minister of the First Church in Salem, Massachusetts, from 1824 to 1844. He later entered politics as mayor of Salem, a state legislator and a member of Congress. His Lectures on Witchcraft (1831) grew into Salem Witchcraft (1867), a detailed history of the trials of 1692 grounded in his knowledge of local families and land. He married a sister of Oliver Wendell Holmes, to whom the book is dedicated.
