David Christie Murray, the English novelist and journalist, published his Recollections in 1908, the year after his death. He looks back on his boyhood in West Bromwich in the Black Country, his first steps in reporting, his years as a newspaper correspondent, including service as a war correspondent, and his long career as a writer of popular fiction. The book is rich in anecdotes of the Victorian press and literary world, with portraits of the writers and editors he knew and letters from George Meredith and Robert Louis Stevenson. Candid, digressive and good-humored, it shows the working life of a professional author in the second half of the nineteenth century. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
