Popular Rhymes and Nursery Tales
A Sequel to the Nursery Rhymes of England
Popular Rhymes and Nursery Tales, published in 1849, was James Orchard Halliwell's sequel to his Nursery Rhymes of England, and like it was gathered largely from oral tradition. It opens with an essay on nursery antiquities, then collects fireside stories such as Teeny-Tiny, Mr. Vinegar, Chicken-Licken, Lazy Jack, The Three Heads of the Well and the grisly tale of Mr. Fox. Later sections bring together game rhymes, riddle rhymes, and nature songs on the rainbow, the weather, the moon, the cuckoo, the robin and the wren, and Who Killed Cock Robin, often with notes on their history. Halliwell, a scholar of Shakespeare and early English literature, preserved many tales later retold for children.
