James Orchard Halliwell-Phillipps (1820–1889) was an English antiquary and Shakespeare scholar. A precocious researcher, he edited early English texts for learned societies while still a young man and published The Nursery Rhymes of England, gathered largely from oral tradition, and its sequel Popular Rhymes and Nursery Tales. His career was shadowed by a scandal over manuscripts removed from Trinity College, Cambridge, and by a quarrel with the collector Sir Thomas Phillipps, whose daughter he married and whose name he later added to his own. His Outlines of the Life of Shakespeare remained a standard work for decades.
