About 9 h 08 min of reading36 chapters

John Hungerford of Baltimore has spent fifty years amassing three million dollars and dies without a child to leave it to. The fortune falls among relations who never crossed his threshold, the Hungerfords and the Kingmans, and the novel follows what wealth does to them: a shipwreck off the Great Bell, a quack doctor named Bilks, a courtroom, a lost baby and a settlement that satisfies no one. William T. Adams, writing as Oliver Optic, was the most popular American author of boys' books in his day; this is one of his rarer adult stories, first serialized in 1866 as The Way of the World and published in book form in 1891. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
