The Yacht Club; or, The Young Boat-Builder
The Yacht Club, published in 1873, is the second volume of Oliver Optic's Yacht Club series, set on the shores and waters of Penobscot Bay in Maine. Its hero, Don John of Belfast, is an enterprising young man who builds boats and races them, and the story includes several regattas, a mysterious tin box, the eccentric Captain Shivernock and a romance with Nellie Patterdale. As the author explains in his preface, Don John has high aims but makes serious mistakes, and the main lesson of the story is that young people should not hide their actions from their parents and friends. Full of sailing lore and incident, it is typical of the wholesome adventure fiction Optic wrote for boys.
